Michael Kanters

Dr. Michael Kanters is a Professor in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management at NC State University. He has led the development of two undergraduate programs, including Sport Management, and two graduate programs at NC State.
His research has focused on factors associated with children’s sport and recreational experiences. He has led several multidisciplinary teams of researchers with a shared interest in youth sports, physical activity, and community health. He has demonstrated an ability to manage large multi-year externally funded research projects, publish findings in high-impact journals, and translate these research findings to effectively inform policy and program changes.
He has led the development of initiatives that positively impact the lives of children through sport and positive youth development. For example, he was instrumental in the establishment of a First Tee™ positive youth development through golf program, and played a leadership role in creating a similar program with the National Hockey League and the Boys and Girls Clubs.
He has made notable contributions to national organizations through service on national boards and committees and through the development of a new national peer-reviewed journal on the scholarship of teaching in Sport Management (Sport Management Education Journal). He was awarded the Gertrude Cox Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching and Learning with Technology and selected as a Faculty Fellow in the Division of Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications.
