The Hornsby Bend River Trail, which follows part of the Texas Colorado River in East Austin, is a hidden gem of the area with plentiful wildlife that few Austinites–with the exception of seasoned birdwatchers–know. Participants will go on a leisurely hike along the trail, guided by Austin Youth River Watch (AYRW) staff, known as River Watchers, who participate in after-school programs and summer camps focused on environmental education, community engagement, and outdoor adventure. The youth in these programs learn to test water quality at local creeks, take part in restoration projects like native planting, and participate in Green Stormwater Infrastructure maintenance activities and trash clean-ups.

At various stops along the trail, participants will learn about edible plants. At one of the trail stops, we will sample water quality in the Colorado River with participants. Participants will additionally learn about AYRW’s partnership with the City of Austin, which has been a proud partner since the 1990’s when AYRW was established.

Note: Restroom facilities are not available on this tour.
