Tonya Pleasant-Wright – Community Advocate, Preservation Leader & Givens District Park Vice President
Tonya Pleasant-Wright is a proud native Austinite who was born, raised, and continues to reside in East Austin. Deeply rooted in the community, her lifelong connection to Givens District Park reflects both her personal history and her ongoing commitment to preserving and uplifting one of East Austin’s most treasured spaces.
From her early years as a cheerleader and swimming in the park’s pool, to participating in park cleanups and now hosting community-centered events, Tonya’s relationship with Givens Park has evolved into one of stewardship and leadership. The park has not only been a place of recreation, but also a cornerstone of community connection, culture, and legacy in her life.
Recognizing the importance of community voice and engagement, Tonya took action after attending a public meeting where she learned that the Givens Advisory Board was no longer active. Driven by a passion for advocacy and preservation, she collaborated with fellow community members to successfully re-establish the Givens Advisory Board, ensuring that residents once again had a platform to support and guide the future of the park.
Today, Tonya serves as the Vice President of the Givens Advisory Board, where she continues to champion initiatives that promote community engagement, park improvements, and cultural preservation. She also serves as a Commissioner on the Austin Historic Landmark Commission for District 1, where she advocates for the protection, recognition, and preservation of historic sites—particularly those that reflect the rich cultural heritage of East Austin.
Through her leadership in both roles, Tonya remains dedicated to honoring the history of her community while actively shaping its future for generations to come.
