Join staff members from Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho Activity Center, The Trail Conservancy, and Austin Watershed Department for a thrilling kayak trip around Ladybird Lake, which is rich in history and its ties to Lady Bird Johnson herself. The “lake,” originally named Town Lake, was created as a man made lake to serve as a cooling pond and mitigate a history of disastrous flooding to the Austin area. Lady Bird Johnson served as a pivotal figure in beautifying the lake and surrounding areas, as well as establishing the trail that loops around Ladybird Lake, what is now the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, a truly beloved feature of this city!

Before we suit up to kayak on Ladybird Lake, we will discuss Camacho’s equitable access programming that allows Austin Youth to become involved in summer camps filled with recreational activities. The tour will also highlight lakeside improvement projects, such as the restoration of the Holly Shores Fishing Pier, and show how a partner organization can team up with the city to contribute to the greater benefit of one of the city’s most beloved fishing spots. The Austin Youth camps are a core part of this activity center, touching the  lives of Austin’s youth, from 5 to 15 years old, by providing access to important environmental experiences. You’ll hear from the youth who participate in Camacho’s camps and gain a first-hand perspective on how these programs contribute to their lives.

Note: Dress for weather and getting slightly wet.  Bring reusable water bottle and snack if needed.  Hat and sunscreen highly recommended.  Water and restroom available at start and end of trip.  Be prepared to kayak up to 2.5 miles. Lifejackets will be provided on site.
