In this session at the UT Astronomy Department Observatory, you will explore the fascinating science of the sun and learn how to safely observe it, empowering you to create engaging public programs that connect the community with our natural world. The observatory serves as a unique gateway to understanding not only the sun itself but also its critical influence on Earth’s environment—from driving weather patterns to impacting ecosystems.

Attendees will receive an overview of the fundamental science behind the sun and the sun-Earth environment, learning how solar activity affects our planet. You will also experience a live demonstration of safe solar viewing techniques, utilizing the observatory’s specialized equipment such as solar-filtered telescopes and dedicated solar viewing instruments. Methods covered will include observing the sun through specially equipped night viewing telescopes, dedicated solar telescopes, and safe solar projection techniques—ensuring public programs can inspire curiosity without compromising safety.

By engaging with the UT Astronomy Department resources, you’ll gain valuable insights into the importance of observing the sun responsibly and understanding its role in Earth’s environmental systems, reinforcing the observatory’s mission to promote science education and environmental awareness in our community.

Note: The first portion of the tour is accessible, but the final part is on the roof and can only be reached by stairs.
