Explore how Austin Independent School District (AISD) is building healthier, happier, and more climate-resilient school communities through innovative green infrastructure, strong inter-agency partnerships, and a deep commitment to sustainability. This mobile workshop will take participants on an electric bus tour to experience firsthand how nature and education intersect across our campuses.

The tour begins aboard one of AISD’s electric buses, where participants will receive a welcome and overview of the day. You’ll hear about the district’s bold green initiatives, including our transition to electric transportation and broader sustainability goals. Learn about the features and benefits of our electric bus fleet and get answers to your questions about the technology driving us forward.

Our first stop is Sanchez Elementary School Park, a joint-use site created in partnership with Austin Parks and Recreation. Here, you’ll gain insight into why green building is a district priority and how it benefits both students and the surrounding community. We’ll explore the challenges and successes of green development, including the complexities of shared-use agreements and how sustainability goals are now embedded in our educational facility design standards.

Next, we’ll head to the Outdoor Wonder and Learning Center, located at the repurposed Metz Elementary School. Before diving into the design and activation of this unique space, participants will be invited to explore the outdoor playscapes and gather in the shaded outdoor classroom to reflect on their personal connections with nature. Through a round of introductions, we’ll share favorite childhood nature memories before discussing how the site was reimagined as a hub for outdoor learning.

The final portion of the workshop includes a guided walking tour led by the Watershed Protection Department. This immersive experience highlights how integrating natural systems supports safe, shaded routes to school and enhances both student well-being and environmental resilience. The walk culminates at the river, where we’ll discuss the broader impact of this collaboration between city agencies and AISD on community access, education, and sustainability.

Throughout the tour, you’ll hear from city and district partners working together to increase park access, embed environmental education across campuses, and create green, climate-ready spaces for all.
