Description/Duties

The current vacancies are in the Athletic/Sports Field Maintenance Assignment and the Riverview/Pro-Sports Maintenance Assignment.  

First review of applications will be Monday, May 13, 2024; then weekly thereafter until all vacancies are filled.  

A Parks Maintenance Worker II works independently while performing a variety of semiskilled to skilled tasks in two or more trades or skill areas, such as carpentry, welding, electrical, masonry, painting, or plumbing for the maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of facilities, fixtures, and equipment at City parks, basins, golf courses, athletic/sports fields, and other recreational areas, including, but not limited to:  chain link fence repair and installation; and repair of parks, playgrounds, golf courses, stadium structures, facilities, and related equipment.  Employees in this class may also provide functional supervision or lead direction and training for Parks Maintenance Assistants, Parks Maintenance Worker I’s, temporary agency workers, or volunteers.  This class performs related duties as required. 

Athletic/Sports Field Maintenance Assignment:  Employees assigned to athletic/sports field maintenance perform construction, maintenance, repair, field game preparation, and related service activities for the athletic fields including a variety of tasks in general trades and/or skilled maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of facilities, fixtures, and irrigation systems.  Duties include:  possibly inspecting play facilities and other equipment; independently scheduling or completing related repairs; planning and organizing work activities; performing advanced irrigation system repairs; programming computerized irrigation system watering schedules; coordinating with SRP and applying fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides.  During the flood irrigation season (April – October) responsibilities may include the facilitation of flood irrigation for various parks and sports facilities throughout Mesa.  This includes setting work hours at varied day and evening times based on the irrigation schedule provided by SRP, performing work with limited assistance and/or supervision, opening and closing flood gates and valves based on field capacity, regulates and measures flows in the City’s distribution system and delivery gates, inspecting flood irrigation systems for breaks/malfunctions, and performing related repairs.

Riverview/Pro-Sports Maintenance Assignment:  Employees assigned to Riverview/Pro-Sports maintenance assignment perform construction, maintenance, repair, and skilled labor in maintaining and repairing the City’s athletic/sports fields and Riverview Park including a variety of tasks in general trades and/or skilled maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of facilities, fixtures, playground equipment, and irrigation systems.  Duties include:  performing landscape maintenance at the stadium common areas and park; conducting safety inspections; independently scheduling or completing related repairs; performing athletic field game preps; advanced repair and programing of computerized irrigation systems; planning and organizing work activities; and applying fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides.

This classification is distinguished from the next lower level, Parks Maintenance Worker I, by the advanced skill level and independence exercised by the Parks Maintenance Worker II.  The Parks Maintenance Worker II class is distinguished from the next higher level, Trades Worker, by the latter’s performance of the full-range of tasks of a trade at the journey-level and, with the exception of the combined trades of electricity and plumbing, performs nearly all of the work in one trade.  Supervision is received from a Parks Maintenance Leader or Parks and Community Facilities Maintenance Foreman (depending on assignment) who reviews work through observation, conferences, reports, and spot checking of results achieved.  Employees are required to use appropriate safety equipment and procedures in performing assignments.  A Parks Maintenance Worker II may be subject to yearly rotational stand-by duty and 24-hour call-out; working evenings, early mornings, and weekend shifts.  This class is FLSA nonexempt.

Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications Required.  Graduation from high school or GED.  Two years of experience in commercial irrigation systems, flood irrigation, golf course maintenance, or sport turf maintenance. 

Special Requirements.  Must meet the qualifications to wear a tight-fitting respirator by passing a medical evaluation in accordance with Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.134 by hire or promotion date, and must maintain certification.  Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver’s License by hire or promotion date.  Must possess certification as a Pest Management Professional from Arizona’s Office of Pest Management in the categories of 3-Ornamental & Turf and 4-Right-of-Way within six months of hire date. 
 
Preferred/Desirable Qualifications.  Irrigation and baseball/softball turf maintenance experience is preferred.
