Addressing Development Pressure in Parks

As urban density increases, cities face growing pressure to repurpose public parkland and green space. It is critical to protect parks and green spaces so local communities can continue to enjoy their environmental, recreational, social, and health benefits. This webinar will highlight how nonprofit organizations in two cities are preserving park and recreation assets for public use.

We’ll hear from Friends of the Parks in Chicago, which has successfully prevented private waterfront development in public spaces by:

  • Using legal help, philanthropic support, coalitions, and narrative-building
  • Focusing on establishing stronger proactive protections and policies

We’ll also hear from The Emerald Necklace Conservancy in Boston on their work to protect land in Franklin Park from the development of a professional sports facility by:

  • Evaluating legal and regulatory protections for public lands
  • Partnering with community groups to advance community-centered options for a more community-centered and public plan

Join us to understand the forms development pressure can take and how to build a proactive strategy to safeguard the public value of your city's parkland and open spaces.
