Nathan Hilmer

Based in Madison, Wisconsin, Nathan Hilmer is a Professional Landscape Architect, Associate, and lead designer with SmithGroup’s urban design and waterfront studio. His work focuses primarily on the planning and design of waterfront parks and trails, shoreline stabilization and renaturalization, and the redevelopment of former industrial waterfronts, with a strong focus on Great Lakes shoreline projects.

His studio contributions extend beyond the land/water interface and include urban parks, civic plazas, streetscapes, campus planning and design, and cultural projects. As a design leader at SmithGroup, Nathan’s work is progressive but still rooted in place and community. Through his engagement across all phases of diverse and complex projects, he strives to create places that are aspirational, functional, and flexible.
