Back home now in the nation’s capital city, one overarching takeaway from Greater & Greener 2026 keeps clinging to me like Washington, D.C.’s hot, humid summer air: urban parks can no longer be viewed as mere green leisure spaces. Today, they are serving as our cities’ most vital physical and civic defense mechanisms against a changing climate.
Sometimes, the universe reinforces a conference theme a little too perfectly. During our time in Austin, we saw firsthand how extreme weather is disrupting day-to-day operations. In a twist of climate irony, our scheduled East Austin Flood Tour and our walking tour of Lower Onion Creek—which was designed to showcase how the city turns flood buyouts into new parkland—had to be canceled. Why? Because Austin broke a local record, bombarded by nearly three inches of rain in the early morning hours.
But resilient cities – and conferences – don’t just absorb the shock; they adapt. To beat the sweltering Texas heat, we shifted our outdoor programming to the mornings and evenings. We witnessed Austin’s efforts to combat extreme heat through its innovative “Cool Corridor” Initiative. This program strategically integrates cooling interventions directly into the public realm—deploying smart bus stops, community drinking fountains, rapid tree canopy plantings, and massive shade structures, such as the one at the Gus Garcia Recreation Center — to protect community well-being.
When crises hit, park systems are increasingly thrust onto the frontlines of emergency response. During our plenary panel, New Roles for Park Partners in Disruptive Times, we heard heartwrenching stories about how climate shocks are forcing park departments to act as literal first responders.
Norma García-González, director of the County of Los Angeles Parks & Recreation, shared a profoundly moving account of her agency’s response to the devastating Eaton Fire. Even though many of her own staff members had tragically lost their homes, they stepped up without hesitation to launch emergency Care Camps, providing safe shelter, childcare, emergency supplies, and mental health trauma support for impacted youth.

We saw a similar infrastructure model in Austin’s upgraded Montopolis Neighborhood Park. Funded through a combination of city bonds and a federal Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) grant, this site has been entirely reimagined as a sustainable resilience hub. Its joint-use recreation center serves double duty, housing Austin Public Health services while also offering a central neighborhood refuge with a warming and cooling center, an emergency shelter, a food pantry, and a commercial kitchen.
Building the resilient city of the future requires us to look both forward at modern data and backward at time-tested historical ecological practices.
Nature-based infrastructure is still relatively young, and park leaders are actively measuring its long-term viability. In Bloomington, Indiana, planners recently evaluated Miller Showers Park. Designed two decades ago to manage, store, and naturally cleanse stormwater from a massive 180-acre downtown watershed, a 20-year retrospective assessment is providing invaluable data on how green infrastructure holds up over time.
Conversely, when it comes to managing the growing threat of urban wildfires, scientists are looking to the past. For more than twenty years, researchers at the University of Texas at Austin and the Lady Bird Wildflower Center have been studying prescribed burns. This hybrid land-management approach merges modern science with ancient Indigenous “cultural burning” practices, utilizing controlled fire to rejuvenate native plants and dramatically reduce hazardous wildfire fuel loads.
As we look toward the next generation of park leadership, deploying nature-based solutions introduces an incredible secondary benefit: green economic opportunity. Putting nature to work via Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) mitigates floods and lowers urban heat, but it also demands a newly trained, highly skilled maintenance workforce. Park and water agencies have a historic opportunity to build robust career ladders in horticulture and adaptive ecosystem management, channeling green economic opportunities directly into historically underinvested communities. The challenges facing our urban centers are complex, but the stories shared in Austin prove that our multi-sector network has the tools and the passion to turn these climate crises into catalysts for equitable growth.
