Shyra Peyton joins the City Parks Alliance team as program manager, where she supports the development of program content for the biennial Greater & Greener international urban parks conference and biennial park study tour. She also supports member capacity building programs including webinars and other virtual and in-person learning opportunities.
Before joining CPA she worked several years in program development and management at the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. She also worked as a conference program coordinator and festival curator for the departments of Women and Gender Studies and American studies at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, specializing in community-based participatory research projects and arts integration educational programming. Prior to that, she served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nicaragua where she had the unique opportunity to create and implement community development projects, travel exchanges, and English as a Second Language (ESL) educational programs.
She received her master’s degree in Folklore Studies with a graduate certificate in Community-based Participatory research from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her master’s thesis explored cultural festivals as sites of social transformation and healing for marginalized communities.
