Brookside Gardens, a horticultural display garden in Wheaton, Maryland, seeks a passionate and enthusiastic Wellness & Advancement Program Specialist with broad experience in fundraising, informal programming, and community engagement.   The potential candidate should be a highly collaborative team member that will put Brookside Gardens’ mission first and help to deliver remarkable experiences to our guests.  The Program Specialist will interact regularly with Brookside Gardens donors, the general public, and community members providing exemplary customer service using exceptional communication skills, both written and oral.

Throughout the year, Brookside Gardens hosts more than 1,000,000 visitors, many at engaging programs and events for children and adults, including the winter light display. Examples of Important Duties

Advancement Program

  • Serves as first contact for prospective donors
  • Coordinates tribute bench and brick programs, including donor cultivation, inventory management, pricing, ordering, installation, plaquing, and donor agreement.
  • Creates and maintains donor records; researches donor/tribute personal information
  • Creates/maintains records of donor items (e.g., tribute benches, trees and bricks)
  • Monitors donor fund spending
  • Writes and distributes donor correspondence
  • Generates donation reports using Raiser’s Edge
  • Responds to and coordinates requests from outside organizations for donations to fundraisers
  • Plans donor events, such as cultivation events and dedications.  Identifies appropriate invitees, develops mailing list, assists with program planning, develops logistics and timetable, coordinates catering, creates program materials.
  • Maintains confidentiality of personal and sensitive data related to donor gifts and donor records.
  • Assists in the development of marketing tools for donor program, including printed material like brochures, articles, and other documents; and social media.

Well-being Programs

  • Coordinates Strolls for Well-being Program for Brookside and McCrillis Gardens
  • Defines goals and objectives of Stroll Program; sets standards, rules, prices and fees;
  • Schedules Strolls Program dates and times
  • Develops relationships with local medical providers
  • Develops relationships with local therapists
  • Researches and applies for grants to support the Strolls Program
  • Initiates vendor agreements and negotiates terms of payment
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises seasonal Strolls Program leaders and volunteers
  • Evaluates and counsels Strolls Program leaders; approves timecards and leave requests
  • Assists in the development of marketing tools for the Strolls program, including printed material like booklet, brochures, articles, and other documents; and social media.
  • Develops tools to evaluate success of the Strolls Program
  • Coordinates mindfulness walking programs
  • Becomes well-versed in the physical, emotional, spiritual benefits of nature
  • Researches and evaluates new opportunities to provide well-being programs
  • Develops alternate sources of funding for well-being programs, including grants and corporate donations
  • Represents Brookside Gardens at meetings of well-being organizations/groups

Community Engagement

  • Supports Brookside Gardens’ racial equity initiatives through tabling events, developing community partnerships, and collaborating with other Brookside Gardens staff.

Administrative/Clerical Support 

  • Obtains bids and price quotes; writes purchase orders and check requests; deposits revenues in bank.
  • Communicates effectively with business contacts.  Establishes and maintains working relationships with internal and external contacts.  Actively listens to and understands wants, needs and concerns of stakeholders, and coordinates to obtain desired results.
  • Effectively uses computer and modern office suite software and specialized software for multiple functions.

Preferred Qualifications 

  1. Experience in one or more of the following areas: Urban Studies, Nonprofit Management, Public Health, Psychology, Marketing and Community Relations, Human and Social Services.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management, Finance, Business or any related field.
2. One (1) year of experience in human resource management, finance or any other related area of business administration.
3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total 5 years.
