Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

Under the direction of the Commissioner and his/her designee, performs work of moderate difficulty in the department’s Design & Construction Division in the planning, management and review of design and development projects and performs related work as required.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the development of multiple capital and non-capital park improvement projects of varying complexity: develops and tracks scope, schedule, and budget of open space, park and playground projects; monitors design and construction by outside contractors (schematic design, design development, construction documents, designer & contractor selection, construction monitoring, project close-out and evaluation).
  • Reviews drawings for design and detailing of park and playground improvements such as, but not limited to site improvements, paving, drainage, site structures, play equipment and landscaping.
  • Informs and assists in the planning of development programs, the formation of departmental design goals and standards, and in the evaluation of development, management and maintenance programs.
  • Provides site support for parks and playgrounds; including writing grants and proposals; providing maintenance coordination, developing agreements, performing project inspections and reviews, and other support as required.
  • Organizes and participates in interdepartmental and intergovernmental meetings and presentations to obtain permits and approvals, and promote consensus for development programs.
  • Plans and implements the public participation component for all projects. Includes facilitating meetings with constituents, community groups, and non-City partners to inform the public, answer questions, and clearly communicate project objectives. Drafts project website updates and other project communications.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicant must have (a) at least four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid professional experience in open space, parks, and playground development involving site analysis, design, drafting, construction documents, cost estimating and construction supervision of which (b) at least two (2) years must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity or any equivalent of such experience and substitutions as determined by the Division of Personnel Administration.
  • A bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in a related field required and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. No Substitutions will be allowed for the (b) experience.
  • Strong writing skills preferred.
  • Landscape architect preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a current MA driver’s license.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.

Boston Residency Required.
