Ecological Restoration Coordinator

Ecological Restoration Coordinator
Organization Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy
Location Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Job Type Full Time
Application Deadline Mar 31, 2023

The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy (PPC) is seeking a motivated individual with training in Ecological Restoration and Science Communication to facilitate new conservation and forest stewardship work in Hays Woods, a 626-acre greenspace recently designated as a park in the City of Pittsburgh. The Ecological Restoration Coordinator will act as the PPC’s point person for stewardship activities, partner engagement, public-facing communication, and reporting outcomes related to work in Hays Woods.

The Ecological Restoration Coordinator will work in the Horticulture and Forestry (H&F) department at the PPC and will report directly to the Ecological Projects Manager. The H&F team is a small but dedicated team of field-based practitioners working to deliver the organization’s mission objectives related to landcare in Pittsburgh’s parks. Additional guidance for this position will be provided by the Community Engagement and Marketing Managers at the PPC.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ecological science, be able to work independently, engage with diverse partners and stakeholders to plan and communicate expectations, lead groups in field-based stewardship activities (primarily related to invasive species management), produce clear reports and maps of accomplished work, identify and prioritize objectives to further an over-arching goal, and creatively utilize available resources to maximize efficacy.

Work will also include assistance with maintenance and monitoring of restoration sites in other Pittsburgh Parks; outcomes and conditions of these sites will be used to develop best management practices specifically tailored to Pittsburgh’s urban ecosystem. Some involvement in system-wide restoration initiatives (eg. refinement and implementation of invasive species management techniques, ecological stressor mitigation, and facilitating passive restoration) will also be expected.

Please note this is a grant funded position with salary secured for 15 months of full-time employment. Continued employment beyond 15 months may be possible if additional funds can be secured. Work is expected to be approximately 50% field based and 50% office based. The projected start date for this position is no later than April 1, 2023.
