The Greenway Conservancy is seeking a highly motivated individual for a full-time position as Director of Programs and Community Engagement. Overseeing the Programs and Outreach Department, the Director is a critical member of the senior management team, helping to shape the Conservancy as it incorporates new stakeholders and initiatives while running a robust range of ongoing programming and partnerships, and lifting up the work of the entire Conservancy through messaging and community engagement. - Provide the leadership and direction to assure that the Conservancy provides a welcome, vibrant, public park in all programmatic areas, including festivals, special events, fitness, play programming, the Greenway Carousel, the food truck program, beer gardens, and promotions.
- With the Programs staff, plan strategically for innovative partnerships, programs, and business ventures, and oversee earned revenue income of $1M+.
- Lead major programs projects, analysis, community engagement initiatives, and state/city conversations around programs, events, and earned income.
- Oversee the Conservancy’s outreach by planning strategically for new or improved services in marketing, public relations, owned media, community/volunteer engagement, and governmental affairs, strengthening the positions of The Greenway and the Greenway Conservancy.
- Provide ongoing strategic review of communications, signage, graphic design, and other materials to ensure commitment to high-quality materials.
- Lead major outreach policy projects and external consultant management.
- Collaborate on the incorporation of the Greenway Park Rangers into the Outreach team, supporting the messaging and guest services work of these critical ambassadors.
- Support the Ranger staff as they fulfill their role as ambassadors for all park visitors
- Provide strategic review of the Park Rangers engagement with organizations that provide services for persons experiencing homelessness.
- Provide strategic review and alignment of mission with Greenway Park Guidelines and local laws.
- Support communication and alignment with the activities of other Conservancy departments.
- Hire, coach, manage, and mentor staff that includes 3-5 direct reports and an overall team of 8 full-time staff and 3-4 summer interns.
- Prepare and manage the annual departmental budget, project budgets, and goals for Programs and Outreach departments.
- Develop, negotiate, and manage Departmental contracts.
- Collaborate and coordinate with all other departments to collectively support achieving organizational goals.
- Present updates at Board of Directors meetings.
- Represent the Conservancy externally by liaising with a large network of stakeholders, serving as a spokesperson for the Conservancy as needed, and speaking at conferences and panels, both locally and nationally.
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required, preferably in a related field.
- At least seven years of successful work experience in nonprofit programming, event management, or a related field.
- At least five years of experience managing employees and teams.

- Strong written and oral communication skills, including goal articulation and problem-solving. Bilingual skills are a plus, especially in Chinese languages given our programs in the Chinatown neighborhood.
- Experience working in a diverse and inclusive organization is a plus.
- Computer proficiency, especially in Google for Work. Graphic design skills are a plus.
- Ability to work outside in all types of weather, to kneel or stand for periods of time, and to lift 25 pounds.
- Familiarity with Boston and the Rose Kennedy Greenway is a plus.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive Conservancy vehicles in downtown Boston.
- This is a full time (40 hours a week) position with full benefits.
Work hours are generally Monday through Friday, but flexibility is required to accommodate evening, Saturday, and Sunday shifts, especially between April and October;
Work will generally take place indoors in the office, but the position will require a significant amount of time in the parks, especially between April and October, in all weather conditions.
- This is a hybrid position with the option to work remotely two days a week if the work allows.
- All incoming employees will be required to comply with the Conservancy’s current COVID-19 policy and guidelines.
- Salary range $95,000-$110,000
