THE POSITION:

The East Bay Regional Park District is a system of beautiful parklands and trails in Alameda and Contra Costa counties to the east of San Francisco. Established in 1934, the Park District is the oldest and largest regional park system in the United States, managing over 125,000 acres of parkland within 73 regional parks, and encompassing over 1,300 miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding and nature learning.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Under general direction, serves as Manager of the Creative Design Group, managing Graphic Design, Environmental Graphics, and Exhibits departments.  This position is responsible for the design and production of all District branding and graphics, including publications, signs, interpretive panels, exhibits, videos, and marketing collateral to enhance and promote the District’s mission.

• Strong creative direction skills, with a keen eye for innovative ideas and trends

• Experienced in art direction, with the ability to affably bring out the best work in others

• Has deep technical knowledge and practical application of the complete design process for environmental graphics and exhibit design, from concept to installation

• Hands-on experience and knowledge of production equipment (C&C Router, large format printers, hand and shop tools)

• Good collaborative and communication skills

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Planning, organizing, overseeing construction, and managing all functions and projects related to the design and production of work in Creative Design Group;

• Producing the highest professional quality multi-media and marketing collateral used for exhibits, signage, branding and marketing materials;

• Ensuring all deadlines are met;

• Coordinating activities and fostering cooperative working relationships with District stakeholders, contractors, outside agencies, subordinate employees, and staff from other District Divisions;

• Additionally, this position maintains critical records, prepares various written correspondence including staff reports, and monitors budget expenditures;

• Proposes clear and current guidelines for District branding, wayfinding, exhibit development and graphics standards;

• Obtains necessary construction and installation permits and identifies alternative solutions to obstacles in the implementation of design and production objectives;

• Stays current on new trends and innovations in the field of environmental graphics, industrial design, interpretive exhibits, and makes recommendations for the procurement of software and hardware as necessary to maintain safety and efficiency in the production of graphics and exhibits;

• Continually assesses the inclusionary and interactive effectiveness of collateral production and makes adjustments accordingly;

• And provides direction and exercises the full scope of supervisory responsibilities over professional, technical, and administrative staff in support of the divisional and organizational goals.

• Performs highly responsible, complex assistance to the Assistant General Manager of Public Affairs and the General Manager;

• And performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in environmental graphics, industrial or graphic design, architecture, or a related field.

Experience: Four years of professional or technical experience in production of environmental graphics or exhibit design. At least two of the four years must be at the supervisory level.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Desirable:  

• Expertise in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop

• Expertise in MS Office

• Knowledge of SketchUp, Rhino, or other 3D software is a plus.

• Knowledge of SmartSheet, and DAM platforms is a plus.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Must be proficient in the knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and production techniques of digital photography, videography, media duplication, non-linear editing, compression, and sign making.

• Must be knowledgeable of ADA regulations; federal, state, and local regulatory requirements; and District ordinances as they relate to signage and exhibit production and installation.

• Must have excellent skills in the design, production, and installation of environmental graphics and exhibits; establishing and maintaining positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels; supervising staff and volunteers; written and oral communication; project management; budget administration; and exercising sound independent judgment.

• Must have the ability to operate and maintain a network of computers, printers, and plotters; and produce the full variety of environmental graphics and exhibits.

• Must be able to drive to various work sites to meet with stakeholders and install visual graphics, and must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Conditions of Employment:  

• All East Bay Park Regional District employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment.

• A valid California State driver’s license is a condition of initial and continued employment in this position.

• Persons in this classification must be able to use a respirator in the performance of their work. In accordance with CAL OSHA respirator regulations, incumbent shall not wear beards or long sideburns that impede the effectiveness of the respirator.

• This position is in the Management group and is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (i.e. is not eligible for overtime).

• The selected candidate must pass the Park District’s Level 1 background check, which consists of Department of Justice (DOJ) fingerprinting, FBI fingerprinting, professional references, and education verification. Pursuant to the Federal Immigration and Reform Act of 1986, all hired applicants will be required to provide proof of identity and appropriate work authorization documents prior to commencement of employment.
